Abstract

In this research, the effects of salinity stress on seed germination, seedling growth and proline content in Atriplex verrucifera were investigated. This species is native to Iran, and could be used as a forage for live stocks.
Plants were grown in 20 cm diameter pots in a growth chamber at 25 ± 2 °C and a 16 hour photoperiod. The experimental design was a completely randomized design with 4 replications of 5 treatments (0, 100, 200, 300 and 400 mM NaCl). Result showed that in this plant, increase of salt concentration caused delay in rate and decrease of germination. However, seedling phase, needs some salt.
In Atriplex verrucifera, treatments from 100 to 200 mM NaCl increased fresh and dry mass compared to the control, but greater salinities declined growth rate. Optimal fresh and dry mass prodution occurred at a salinity of 200 mM NaCl.
