Abstract

To evaluate relationships between forage dry matter yield, seed yield and their components, 12 varities of white clover (Trifolium repens L.), were evaluated using a complete randomized blocks design with three replications at Alborz Research Center, Karaj, Iran during 2001-2002. The results of correlation analysis showed positive and significant relationships between forage and leaflet lamina area, canopy height, petiol length, persistency and stolon density. Seed yield had positive and significant relationships with thousand seed weight and florets number per inflorescence. Using regression analysis, the most important traits for forage and seed yield were identified. Results showed that leaflet lamina area, persistency, internode length and number of inflorescences per stolon were the important triats for forage and accounted for 79% of forage yield variation. Using path analysis, leaflet lamina area and persistency had direct positive effects on forage yield. It was concluded that leaflet lamina area and persistency were the most important triats for improved forage yield. Regression analysis for seed yield showed that thousand seed weight, stolon thickness and number of florets per inflorescence were the important triats for seed yield (R2=0.79). Thousand seed weight and number of florets per inflorescence had positive and significant direct effects on seed yield. It was concluded that thousand seed weight and floret number per inflorescence were the important traits, in order to improve varieties for seed yield in white clover.
